Attractions within the town area...

One of the places we recommend for visitors new to Alice Springs and Central Australia is our local information centre, where the helpful staff can answer your questions and provide you with a heap of information. They can even send out brochures and information on request.

The following local attractions are a 5 to 15 minutes walk from each other

and only 15-25 minute walk from the south end of Todd Mall:

— Exploration time: 1 to 2 hrs.
Live reptile displays. Try to make the morning or afternoon show. Provides a great insight into the reptiles of Central Australia.

 — Exploration time: 1 hour or more.
Great displays and information about women’s role and contribution to Australia’s heritage and history.

 — Exploration time: 45 minutes or more.
Shows at regular intervals. How we provide medical services to outback isolated areas. There is a cafe on site.

Town Area


Town Area

Following are some of the local attractions within the town area of Alice Springs:


  • ANZAC Hill

    — Exploration time: 15 to 30 minutes, unless you are walking up or are waiting for sunrise / sunset.

    ‘Untyeyetwelye’ is a special place to the Aboriginals and the site of the ANZAC Hill War Memorial. Great views of Heavitree Gap and Mount Gillen.

  • Megafauna Central

    — Exploration time: 30 minutes or more. Nearby cafes.

    Megafauna Central showcases the unique megafauna of Central Australia of the Miocene epoch from the Alcoota Scientific Reserve.

  • Olive Pink Botanic Garden

     — Exploration time: a couple of hours or more, especially if you do the walks. There is a cafe.

    This is an example of an ‘Arid Zone Botanic Garden’ in the Northern Territory. Keep your eyes peeled for the Euro and wallabies (usually seen on the hills). 

  • Todd Mall and Sunday Markets

     — Exploration time: an hour or more.

    One of the main shopping area of town that includes a plaza, food hall, cafes, galleries and shops. Also where the markets are usually held every second Sunday, including some special additional market days. Contact the Visitor Centre for dates.


North

Following attractions are just north of our property:


  • Alice Springs School of the Air

     — Exploration time: an hour.

    Meeting the educational needs of primary school children in the Outback.

  • Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historical Reserve

     — Exploration time: 1 to 2 hours or more if you enjoy the walks and picnic area.

    The original site of the first European settlement in the region. There are also a number of walks to be enjoyed. There is also bike hire, cafe and kiosk.


West

Following attractions are just west of the town:


  • Alice Springs Cultural Precinct

    also known as the Araluen Cultural Precinct


     — Exploration time: at least half a day. There is also a cafe.

    A number of fascinating attractions in one unique location, including the Araluen Arts Centre (incorporating the Albert Namatjira Gallery), Museum of Central Australia and Aviation Museum.

  • Alice Springs Desert Park

     — Exploration time: allow 4 hours or more. There is also a cafe.

    Introduction to Australia’s desert, the landscapes, animals and plants of central Australia’s and their traditional use and management by the Aboriginal people. There are walk-in aviaries and enclosures, including the Red Kangaroo enclosure. Make sure you catch the Birds of Prey Show and check-out the Nocturnal House. There is also the Nocturnal Tour - makes sure you ask about the tour when you purchase your entry ticket.


South and South-East

Following attractions are to the south and south-east of town (some like the Kangaroo Sanctuary you will need to book):


  • Earth Sanctuary

     — Earth Sanctuary is just 15 minutes south-east of Alice Spring on Colonel Rose Drive.

    They offer day and night tours including a dinner and show, as well as catering for special events and tailored tours. They also offer astronomy tours.

  • National Road Transport Hall of Fame

     — Exploration time: couple of hours or more, especially for the motoring transport enthusiast.

    About 10 km south of town, National Road Transport Hall of Fame, the Old Ghan Train Railway Museum and the magnificent Kenworth Dealer Truck Museum collectively make up the most comprehensive land transport museum in the southern hemisphere.

  • Kangaroo Sanctuary

    There are no self-drives to the Sanctuary to ensure protection of the natural environment. Check their website as guided tours are only available on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – you will need to ensure you book in advance.
