With its monochromatic colour and the delicate hint of colour, this beautiful screen print depicts a major women’s ceremonial site known as Mina Mina, the artist’s custodial country, located near Lake Mackay in the Tanami Desert. During the Jukurrpa Ancestral women of the Napangardi and Napanangka sub-section groups (aunt / niece relationship, in which knowledge is passed from one to the other) gathered to collect ceremonial digging sticks (karlangu) that had emerged from the ground. They then proceeded east, performing rituals of song and dance, to the place known as Jankinyi.

This beautiful screen print is by world renowned artist Mitjili. 'Wilkinkarra' is the Pintubi name for Lake Mackay. This area is Mitjili’s traditional country and this is the region where she lived pre-contact. Mitjili’s family would camp on the Walatu (islands of the lake) and then go into the surrounding bush to hunt. One of their main camps was called “Parrailpit”, a large wetland area with many eucalyptus trees.

Julie depicts her Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming), which is associated with her father’s traditional country of Pirlinyanu, a rocky outcrop in the Tanami Desert, west of Yuendumu and towards the WA border. This rocky country with its significant waterholes and plentiful bush tucker is one of many significant locations for the Water Dreaming because if you know which rocks to move you always have access to fresh water in the deep natural occurring wells of Pirlinyanu.

The homestead is flooded to the roof with dirty floodwater shown as pink, a colour she often used in her ochre on canvas paintings. The hills in the lower right depict the landscape of 'Old Texas'. To escape the rising water, all the stores were taken to higher ground and the people sat around and drank beer, waiting for the waters to recede.

“A long time ago I used to go hunting at Yardanggarlm. This time I went hunting with my dog. I went hunting there. I was looking for bush turkeys, kangaroos, anything. I found a turkey but I had no bullets for my rifle. No gun, no anything. So I got my dog to get the turkey. He jumped down from my car. He ran underneath the car, chasing a big goanna. He ended up getting that goanna and then I sent him after the turkey. He jumped and grabbed the turkey by the leg and pulled him down. He grabbed him just when he was ready to fly away”.

Before Melissa was born her mother heard a knocking on the door. When she opened it and looked outside no one was there. Her father was sleeping at the time and when he woke up he told Melissa's mother that he had dreamed of an animal spirit. That animal spirit was Melissa's totem and that is how her parents knew that she was inside her mother. Melissa participated in a print workshop held in Milingimbi with printmaker Theo Tremblay which accommodated students between the ages of 12 and 17 years. These students were asked to depict family scenes.
