The artist’s matrilineal lineage is connected to the Lapita people who travelled long distances throughout the Pacific from South East Asia in outriggers, navigating at night by the stars. Much has been written about the Lapita pottery that predates many civilizations and is wide ranging throughout the Pacific. They had beautiful designs and quite sophisticated usage that stem from water jugs, cooking pots and also ceremonial usage that depict characters from mythological times connected with places, animals and fauna.

This painting is about getting snake vine (Ngalyipi) from where they grow around the sand hills of Lake MacKay and splitting the vine to make traditional rope or twine. Traditionally, the bark is torn into long strips that are plaited together to form sandals that could be used when the sand was very hot or when there were fields of sharp broken stones to walk upon. The snake vine (Ngalyipi) was an important component in certain ceremonies.

After the major flood in Fiji at the beginning of 2009 during which animals and crops were destroyed and lost, the artist was fascinated to see how primitive life re-emerged in the aftermath. Traditional village people believe that ancestral spirits live on plants, on wind and in the sea. Big rains and flood are caused by Ancestral Mermaids (who are represented in the lower right of the painting). There is a little angel running along the top left. Rusiate has placed his personal trademark symbols on the upper right of the painting and traditional tapa designs filter throughout the work.

During the creation era, the Tingari Ancestors gathered at a series of sites for Initiation Ceremonies. They travelled across country, performing rituals at specific sites, creating the natural features of the landscape. These creation stories and rituals are portrayed in song cycles, paintings, ceremonies, and are part of the continuous teaching to the next generation. The artist is retelling the Song Cycle associated with the artist's many ancestral dreaming sites, and the locations of these significant natural sites in the Gibson Desert.

This interesting etching is Kathleen Petyarre principal Dreaming story of the Mountain Devil Lizard. Her signature dots mark the tracks across the land of the tiny creature, but also serve to obscure more important ceremonial meaning in the work. Born in 1940, Kathleen’s Anmatyerr country is about 300 kms to the north-east of Alice Springs in central Australia. Her art practice has included batik, work on paper and canvas, and she has worked as a professional artist in Utopia and, more recently, Adelaide, for over 25 years.

In this sublime miniature work the artist has given extra arms and legs (some carried by angel wings) towards the Horseman to give added protection for his journey. The horse and the horseman are deeply connected and share the same essence and structure. This work is delicate, yet packed with the artist’s touch. There is his trademark graphic black and white design elements, his use of red, and the symbolism carried in the lines and pattern, delicately etched into such a small space.
