In this multi-layered and complex work, the artist is making a statement about ripping apart and opening up to the hidden aspects of ourselves which are rich and colourful but not always seen. The repetitive symbol of a diagonal cross with a flower is the promise of opening up to full bloom. Named Contemporary Fijian Artist of the Year in 1999, Rusiate comes from a long lineage of potters, carvers, tapa cloth and fibre artists. With a number of solo and group exhibitions his work is a sensuous mix of past and present, myth and reality.

Turukawa, representing the Spirit, the land and identity, watches over us, reminding us not to forget where we come from and to continue to respect traditional values even when located in a more contemporary context. In this work the artist’s story is very hopeful and evolves in a counter clockwise direction from the clashing images at the bottom of the painting all the way around to the newly built constructions at the centre conveying the evolution of our consciousness from the disharmony and confusion of today’s troubled world into a more peaceful and harmonious world.

After the major flood in Fiji at the beginning of 2009 during which animals and crops were destroyed and lost, the artist was fascinated to see how primitive life re-emerged in the aftermath. Traditional village people believe that ancestral spirits live on plants, on wind and in the sea. Big rains and flood are caused by Ancestral Mermaids (who are represented in the lower right of the painting). There is a little angel running along the top left. Rusiate has placed his personal trademark symbols on the upper right of the painting and traditional tapa designs filter throughout the work.
