During the creation era, the Tingari Ancestors gathered at a series of sites for Initiation Ceremonies. They travelled across country, performing rituals at specific sites, creating the natural features of the landscape. These creation stories and rituals are portrayed in song cycles, paintings, ceremonies, and are part of the continuous teaching to the next generation. The artist is retelling the Song Cycle associated with the artist's many ancestral dreaming sites, and the locations of these significant natural sites in the Gibson Desert.

“My paintings are about my country, my mother’s country and my father’s country. We lived in the desert country (the Great Sandy Desert). I paint the waterholes and bush tucker found at those waterholes. We were living on bush tucker in the desert, on bush tucker only. I paint about the time before we knew kartiya.”

In this painting, Rusiate combines elements of the earth and the sea with the overall subject matter of caring for our world we inhabit and acknowledging that all species are interconnected. Mother Nature reaches out in many ways. A human child is growing inside a large whale with human limbs, as does the large lizard underneath.

Julie depicts her Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) - associated with her father’s traditional country of Pirlinyanu, a rocky outcrop in the Tanami Desert, west of Yuendumu and towards the WA border. This rocky country with its significant waterholes and plentiful bush tucker is one of many significant locations for the Water Dreaming - if you know which rocks to move you always have access to fresh water in the deep natural occurring wells of Pirlinyanu. Without this knowledge one could imagine there was no water in this desert landscape.

Born in 1940, Jimmy Pike started his early years in the Great Sandy Desert region of WA, living a traditional nomadic life moving around various waterholes, participating in ceremonies, learning hunting techniques and understanding seasonal bush foods. His people are the Walmajarri, being some of the last to leave the desert country region which influence and inspire his work as an artist. The centre of this limited edition screen print symbolizes a waterhole around which a man is camped. The waterhole is surrounded by desert oak trees and sandhills.

In this beautifully subtle white work, the subject is associated with a Jukurrpa (Dreaming) event in the Tingari Cycle, which is related to the site of Wilkinkarra (the great salt lake of Lake Mackay) in Western Australia where Walala and his family lived a traditional lifestyle until 1984. The quiet intensity of Tjapaltjarri’s rectangular forms seem to have a life of their own, creating movement not only up and down but through the entirety of the screenprint.

Topographically, the sacred site of Mina Mina is made up of two enormous soakage areas that, rarely filled with water, exist as clay-pans. As water soaks into the ground small areas of earth dry out and lift at the edges, becoming delineated by salt. In this striking design of white dotting Dorothy depicts the crustations of salt stretching infinitely onward, etched by the tracks of the women as their paths stretch on, crossing and merging; telling their stories.

Turukawa, representing the Spirit, the land and identity, watches over us, reminding us not to forget where we come from and to continue to respect traditional values even when located in a more contemporary context. In this work the artist’s story is very hopeful and evolves in a counter clockwise direction from the clashing images at the bottom of the painting all the way around to the newly built constructions at the centre conveying the evolution of our consciousness from the disharmony and confusion of today’s troubled world into a more peaceful and harmonious world.

The traditional designs used in painting and printmaking are based primarily on body paint design. The Tiwi creation story explains how the land that forms the islands was separated from the mainland, and in turn divided into the two islands. Tiwi culture is an oral culture, and unlike many other indigenous communities Tiwi does not have traditional representations of animals and spirits. Freda was a senior law person with a strong interest in maintaining culture.
